Who Is Jesus?
By David J. Stewart
"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6
There are many verses that explain to us who Jesus is; but, I would like to direct your attention to one specific verse, John 14:6, which explains to us four very important characteristic's concerning "who" Jesus is. Many religions like to dethrone Jesus and either take His place, or attack His character. These are false religions, guilty of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. By the grace of God, let us look closer into the matter and see "who" Jesus Christ, our Saviour, really is. Now, Jesus said in John 14:6:
I AM THE WAY
"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." Matthew 1:21
Jesus Christ is the way. What on earth does that mean? Jesus Christ is the ONLY way to Heaven. When Adam and Eve had sinned against God, by eating of the forbidden fruit, they brought a curse upon themselves. Sin had entered the world, and that sin nature has been passed down generation to generation to all humanity.
"Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:" -Romans 5:12
Since mankind was unable to redeem himself, man was doomed to his own destruction (Isaiah 64:6). But God, being very merciful and loving towards mankind, decided to pave a way for man to get to Heaven and escape eternal damnation. So He sent His only begotten Son into the world, to pay for men's sins, to make it possible for man to get saved. (John 3:16-18)
Jesus Christ was born, and lived, without sin. And while He was on earth, His entire life, He NEVER sinned! (2nd Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 4:15). Because Jesus never sinned He was the perfect Sacrifice, a Lamb without spot nor blemish, to take man's sins away. He shed His precious blood to pay that price for our sins! Some people, such as John MacArthur, claim that Jesus' blood isn't what saves us--they are LYING! Jesus had to pay a price to take our sins away. A price that NO MAN could pay. The price Jesus paid was the shedding of His own SINLESS blood! Remember, Jesus was born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14), and had no earthly father. God's blood flowed in Jesus' veins (Acts 20:28). That is why we can be saved without having to pay a price--because Jesus paid it already, in full!
"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." 2nd Corinthians 5:21
"In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:" Colossians 1:14
"In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;" Ephesians 1:7
"Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him." Romans 5:9
The way to Heaven is narrow...
"Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it." Matthew 7:13,14
In fact, the way to Heaven is so narrow that 95% of the religious people in this world won't make it. Why you ask? Because 95% of the religious people in this world aren't trusting Jesus Christ alone for salvation. One billion Catholics trust their good works, faithfulness to the Rosary, and the keeping of the seven sacraments to save them. One billion Islamic Muslims don't even believe that Jesus died on the cross. There are 183,000 cults in Japan alone. Then there's the non-religious people of the world, all Hell bound without Jesus Christ. Most of the 1.2 billion people in China are atheists. It is clear why Jesus said that the WAY to Heaven is "narrow," for salvation can only be found by faith alone in Jesus Christ--EXCLUDING any good works, commitments, forsaking of sins, baptism, sacraments, church membership, etc. (Acts 4:12; Ephesians 2:8,9).
- I AM THE TRUTH
So we now know why Jesus Christ is the ONLY "way" to Heaven--because He paid the price for all our horrible sins, by shedding His precious blood at Calvary.
Now let's find out what Jesus meant when He said, "I am the truth." First we must understand what truth is. I urge you to read my other article, What Is Truth. Simply stated, there are two kinds of truth: counterfeit truth and genuine truth. Counterfeit truth is truth perverted into a lie, which is no longer truth (Romans 1:25)! Satan always starts with the truth when he wants to fabricate a lie, to make it appear as truth to his ignorant victim. Using this deception, Satan is deceiving billions of people to choose the tragic road to Hell, and to confuse immature Christians concerning what is Biblical or not.
Jesus Christ is Genuine truth! Genuine truth is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the absolute truth! This is the truth that most people hate hearing, "And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not." -Jesus (John 8:45). The absolute genuine truth doesn't sugar coat anything; but, speaks the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). This is what Jesus meant when He said that He is the truth! You want truth, Jesus Christ is your answer (also see 1st John 5:6-7). Those who are truly saved, have the Spirit of Truth, which is the Holy Spirit, dwelling within them self (John 14:17).
Many people think they have to do good works to obtain their salvation; but, Jesus said that the plain truth is you don't have to do ANYTHING except call upon Him to get saved! (Romans 10:13). Anyone who tells you that you have to work for your salvation, in order to go to Heaven when you die, is LYING TO YOU! Jesus plainly stated the truth in John 3:16...
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
We read in John 17:17 that the Word of God is Truth. Jesus' name is called the Word of God in Revelation 19:13. John 1:1 declares, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." John 1:14 reads, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us." Jesus is the Living Word, and the Bible is the Written Word. To learn the Word of God is to learn the mind of God, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 2:5). The Word of God and Jesus Christ are inseparable. You can't have one without the Other. When popular influences like Oprah Winfrey, John Edward, Sylvia Browne, Char Margolis, and so many others, teach about spirituality without ever mentioning the Word of God--then you know they are false prophets! A faithful minister of God will quote the Word of God extensively. Anyone who claims to know the truth about spiritual matters, who doesn't quote the Bible, is an imposter.
I AM THE LIFE
We know that Jesus Christ is the ONLY way to Heaven, because He paid the price for our sins. And we know we can trust Jesus Christ to save us from going to Hell, because He is the truth, and cannot lie (Titus 1:2). Jesus said what He meant, and meant what He said (John 14:2; Romans 10:11). We can also trust that Jesus is going to give us a new life, a spiritual life--because He tells us in John 14:6 that He is also the Life! To understand this, let me remind you that there are two lives in everybody: a physical life AND a spiritual life. Everyone on earth has a physical life, which is the body, and a spiritual life, which is our inner being. We are all born with a spirit; but, that spirit is DEAD, void of God. That is why, in order for us to get to Heaven when we die, we MUST be born again SPIRITUALLY by the Spirit of God!
"Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." John 3:3
"Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again." John 3:7
How can we be born again spiritually? ONLY through Jesus Christ! That is what Jesus meant when He said, "I am the Life." Jesus wasn't talking about physical life; He was talking about spiritual life. The only way in which our dead spirit can be revived (i.e., born again) is by having the Holy Spirit of God, who is the Spirit of Christ. In order to be born again, and receive such a wonderful hope, all you need to do is admit your sinful condition to God, and then believe upon the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour, to forgive your sins (Acts 16:31; Colossians 1:14; Matthew 3:2,16). That is what Jesus meant when He told us multiple times in His Word, that we may receive everlasting life! It does NOT mean that we will live physically forever! (Romans 6:23; Hebrews 9:27).
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16
"He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him." John 3:36
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life" John 5:24
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life." John 6:47
4. NO MAN COMETH UNTO THE FATHER, BUT BY ME
What did Jesus mean when he said, "No man cometh unto the Father, but by me." He was simply declaring His deity, claiming that He and God the Father are One. So if you believe in God the Father, you also believe in God the Son (and vise versa). Colossians 2:9 reveals to us that Jesus Christ was the physical manifestation of the Divine Godhead to the world, "For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily." God the Father and God the Holy Spirit walked this earth in the flesh of God the Son. This is why Jesus said, "...he that hath seen me hath seen the Father..." (John 14:9). Take a look at these verses that further support this doctrine:
"I and my Father are one." John 10:30
"For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one." 1st John 5:7
"These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God." 1st John 5:13
In Conclusion
John 14:6 is telling us all, that Jesus Christ is the ONLY way to Heaven, because of the price He paid for our sins--He is the way. He is also the truth, which means His Spirit dwells within each and every Christian, teaching them the truth. It also means that God never lies, and we are eternally secure in the everlasting arms of Jesus Christ, "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms..." (Deuteronomy 33:27). The ONLY way in which ANYONE can get saved and enter into Heaven when they die, is by being born again spiritually. In order to do that, we MUST trust in Jesus Christ, our Saviour, by asking Him to forgive us of all our sins. You can assuredly trust Jesus to take you to Heaven when you die, if you'll just believe on Him. Jesus won't lie to you. He is Life. Jesus has promised to give unto us eternal life, spiritually, so we can escape the damnation of Hell. All Jesus asks is that we rely completely upon Him, without reservation, for the forgiveness of our sins, and for salvation. It is Jesus' blood that takes our sins away! And lastly, Jesus is Almighty God (John 1:1,14; 8:58; 10:33; 1st Timothy 3:16; Revelation 1:8). If we put our faith in Jesus Christ, we are putting our faith in the Father. This is why Jesus said that the way to the Father is through Him, because the Father is in Jesus, and Jesus in His Father (John 14:20,23).
I urge you that if you aren't saved, get saved now before it's too late!!!
