The Gift of Helps

By David J. Stewart

1st Corinthians 12:28, “And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.”

The gift of helps. This is an often overlooked little word in the Bible. “Helps” is the gift of rendering by sympathy. Work rendered by sympathy.

In the book Pilgrims Progress written by John Bunyan, there is a character called “Help.” The character “Help” aided the main character “Christian” out of the pit of despondency. Not everyone has the gift of teaching, nor preaching, nor leading, nor writing, nor singing, not giving; but everyone can help others.

Anyone can go to the hospital and visit someone. Anyone can go to a jail and visit someone. Anyone can go to a rest home and visit someone. Millions of people are forgotten about. Anyone can take a box of food to a poor person. Anyone can take a box of candy to someone who is sick. Anyone can smile at a deaf person. Anyone can help others. There is so much we can all do.

If you can't teach, help someone. If you can't sing, help someone. If you can't preach, help someone. If you can't give, help someone. It is very interesting that the Bible mentions a gift of “helps.”

It is tragic that so many churchgoers would rather run the show as an administrator, or be a teacher, or speak-in-tongues, or sing in front of an entire congregation; but how many people want to HELP someone. No one cares about anyone else anymore. So many people want self-glorification. That is what is wrong with this wicked world. People used to care and have genuine concern about others.

Being able to help others in any way is a gift from God, an opportunity. So many people are bedridden due to illness and wish they had the opportunity to walk. The angels in Heaven wish they had the chance to go soul-winning; but cannot. The saints in Heaven wish they go come back and win more souls to Jesus; but they can't. God has given to you and me the awesome privilege and wonderful opportunity to win souls to Jesus Christ, through the saving power of the Gospel (Romans 1:16). Anyone can share the Gospel message of Christ crucified, buried and risen! The eternal destiny of others depends on it!

Every Christian will have some blood on their hands at the Judgment one day; the question is how much blood? There are people around us who have never heard the Gospel. It is our duty to warn them of the judgment to come in Hell fire. The Gospel is their only escape. We have the keys to Heaven and Hell in the preaching of the Gospel. If we don't warn people, we are helping ensure their fate in Hell. If we witness to them, their blood won't be upon our hands; and hopefully they'll repent toward God by faith in Christ to be saved.
